The video clip above shows a maned wolf on land directly next to the Ephemeral Brazil habitat restoration, filmed this week by Santo Adolfo's Zezinho.
The IUCN classifies the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) as 'Near Threatened', although its circumstances are more severe than this may imply. The maned wolf's native range is decreasing, it is persecuted by people (due to beliefs that it hunts livestock) and increasing road connections through its habitat is increasing deaths due to vehicle collisions. Pathogen transfer from livestock is also increasing as farming pressure intensifies.
We are extremely happy that maned wolves are finding sanctuary in the Santo Adolfo landscape. An extremely cautious species, the fact that they are returning is a reflection of the quality of habitat restoration taking place; the landscape must be providing for them in ways that it previously could not.
