The guiña, also known as the Chilean cat, is the smallest cat in the Americas and it also has the smallest range - found primarily in central and southern Chile.

In its southern range, the species is typically associated with moist temperate mixed forests - particularly the Valdivian and Araucaria forests such as those protected in the Nasampulli Reserve.

Due to its restricted range and reliance on vegetation cover, the IUCN Red List classified the guiña as 'Vulnerable' and is under ongoing threat from habitat fragmentation due to logging, agriculture and livestock activities.
