New Colombian National Natural Park
In October 2009 the government of Colombia announced the creation of
Yaigojé Apaporis National Natural Park, a 1 million 80 thousand hectare
(2.6 million acre) park in the Colombian Amazonian rainforest. This is
the first National Park run by the indigenous people
according to their traditional knowledge. In particular it protects
their
territory from gold mining, which was previously a major threat.
Rainforest Concern funded most of this achievement through the Colombian
environmental NGO Gaia Amazonas.
