Why carbon offsetting?

Every person and business emits CO2 and other greenhouse gases by using power and energy in houses, offices and factories, plus the fuel used for travel and for transporting goods around the world. One tonne of CO2 has the same impact wherever in the world it is emitted.

The ‘carbon footprint’ of an individual or a business can be calculated. It can also be reduced significantly by energy efficiency measures, green transport policies or by simple changes we can all make on a daily basis such as signing up to a green energy supplier or reusing our shopping bag; but any activity in an oil-based economy is always going to emit CO2, it is impossible to reduce our carbon emissions to zero. Buying carbon offsets from forest projects is a practical and affordable way to do something about those remaining emissions, while helping to save our natural ecosystems and its biodiversity, supporting local communities and protecting indigenous tribes.

corporate social responsability (CSR)

Many major corporations are signing up to carbon offsetting programmes as part of their CSR agenda.  They do it because it works - stakeholders are influenced by such measures. It demonstrates environmental awareness and accountability.

Making a positive contribution to the environment by reducing your CO2 emissions and offsetting what cannot be eliminated is a clear public statement that you mean business on climate change. Of course, carbon offsetting is only a small part of an environmental strategy, but it is a clear sign that your business is considering the issue and can help increase brand loyalty, status and trust.

The steps your business needs to take are:

1. Reduce your emissions as much as possible

2. Calculate your carbon footprint

3. Offset your unavoidable emissions
