Why should you consider offsetting your carbon emissions?

Many major corporations are signing up to carbon offsetting programmes as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) agenda. They do it because it works - stakeholders are influenced by such measures. It demonstrates environmental awareness and accountability.

It’s responsible

For years, reputable companies have recognised their responsibilities to society and their employees. Today, positive social engagement and care for the environment are the hallmarks of a good business. Because Rainforest Concern is a registered charity, it reinforces both your community and environmental CSR credentials. The business sector has a duty to demonstrate global stewardship which in turn can have positive knock-on effects. Numerous studies link good CSR performance with reduced business risks, higher levels of employee satisfaction and economic success.

It’s commercial

CSR is an investment, not a cost. As well as the savings resulting from lower energy bills, companies with a good environmental record outperform other companies by 43% according to the Environment Agency. Their sales and revenues are better, they grow faster and they have access to capital that would not otherwise be available. The Agency also states that valuations of socially responsible investment funds applying ethical, environmental or social criteria to their investments have grown by 500% in 10 years. Increasingly the supply chain is being scrutinised for its environmental credentials during the procurement process.

It’s good for your brand

Almost 50% of people are now ready to take a stand for ethics and sustainability, even if it means paying a little more when making purchasing decisions. In fact these ethical shoppers spend about £26 billion a year. Making a positive contribution to the environment by reducing your CO2 emissions and carbon offsetting is a clear public statement that you mean business on climate change. Of course, carbon offsetting is only a small part of an environmental strategy, but it is a clear sign that your business is considering the issues and can help increase brand loyalty, status and trust.

It’s good for your staff

The recruitment and retention of staff in a competitive labour market is a business-critical issue. According to one study, when one large employer re-aligned its business objectives with sustainable development, staff turnover dropped by 5%. CSR is important to employees, as it indicates a caring employer. CO2 reduction and carbon offsetting through Rainforest Concern addresses a number of issues that employees are likely to be concerned about: climate change, biodiversity and sustainable development. It can help your employees feel better about the business miles they drive or fly, the work they do and the company they work for.
