Climate & Carbon

A blanket of gases keeps the surface of the earth warm and able to sustain life. As concentrations of these so-called greenhouse gases increase, the blanket gets thicker, trapping in more heat and causing surface air temperatures to rise. Levels of these gases have not been as high as they are today, for at least half a million years. The increase in CO2 (the main greenhouse gas) is predicted to cause an increase in global air temperature of between 1.4°C to 6.4°C this century. A rise in temperature of 2°C would trigger ‘irreversible and catastrophic’ global warming. The eleven hottest years on record have all occurred since the 1990’s.

Rainforests have a central role to play in the slowing of climate change. Please choose a heading from the menu (top left) to find out why, and how you can help...

(NB. We are developing a carbon calculator, but in the meantime, if you have calculated your footprint and would like to make a carbon donation NOW for a forest full of other benefits, click here to go to our Forest Credits payment page)
